From the early morning sunrise on a Tuscan hillside to the evening glow of a small fishing village in downeast Maine, it’s all about the light. I find myself waiting for that precise moment that makes my photography come alive and pulls the viewer into the scene.
I attended Brooks Institute of Photography in the 70’s, obtaining a degree in Industrial and Scientific Photography. Since graduation, my living has been made first as a medical photographer and later in portraiture. I sold landscape images in the U.S. and over 20 countries through Westlight and Corbis stock agencies.
For the past 30 years I have used large format 4×5 and 2 ¼ cameras in my photography, adding digital cameras in 2004. Using Photoshop, a pressure sensitive Wacom tablet, and an Epson 9900 ink jet printer, I able to obtain the high quality of photographic art I am seeking.
With the Cannon 5D Mark 2 digital camera, I am able to capture the subtle details of each scene with stunning clarity and color. Through experimentation, I developed a style of photography I call “painting with light.” What I once thought was a highly manipulated enlarger printed photograph I now realize was only the beginning. The digital imaging darkroom puts me in total control of the photograph’s color, contrast, and density down to the smallest detail. Using darkroom/digital techniques, I add shadow and light, sharpen or blur, fine tune color, and remove distracting elements. These techniques direct the eye of the viewer within my photographs.
I have chosen fine art watercolor paper and canvas along with long lasting pigmented inks that will outlive traditional color prints by decades.
