UUCC Forefather: Quillen Hamilton Shinn (1845-1907)
“Universalism is the gospel of hope, the religion of the larger heart. It speaks to the lonely and the lost, not with fear, but with the promise that love is stronger than any sin, and grace greater than any grief.” Quillen Hamilton Shinn Tucked in the back corner of our sanctuary, among the portraits of past ministers, is the image of someone who never served this congregation—at least, not in the traditional sense. Who was Quillen Hamilton Shinn (1845–1907), and why does his photo hang on our wall?
This Father’s Day, Rev. Mandy Goheen invites us to explore the life and legacy of this passionate Universalist circuit rider who brought the message of boundless love to the hills and hollers of Appalachia. Known as the "apostle of Southern Universalism," Shinn traveled by horseback across the Southeast—preaching in schools, homes, and even fields—planting the seeds of Universalism in communities like ours long before churches took root.
As we honor all forms of fathering, we’ll reflect on Shinn’s enduring spiritual influence, and how his message of radical inclusion and universal grace continues to shape the love we practice here at UUCC today.

Who Wants to Help with UUCC at Pride????
Chattanooga Pride is Saturday, September 27
We need a group of folks to start planning our participation at the festival and parade! What might that entail? Making sure UUCC is registered for both the parade and the festival. Recruiting participants to staff a table and march in the parade. This committee might come up with giveaways for the parade. Will we have a wagon? Will we have bubbles, noise makers, and rainbow costumes? Flags for our walkers? What brochures, tokens to give away at the table?
