Pentacost: Translation, Not Uniformity

Service Leader: Rev. Jeff Crim

We are delighted to welcome Rev. Jeff Crim back to the pulpit.

A few questions from Rev. Crim to guide our thinking:
  1. What are the different kinds of "languages" spoken in church today?
  2. How do our differences enrich our experience of unity?
  3. What is the greatest obstacle to good communication?

UUCC's Searching for Justice Trip Update

UUCC is going to Montgomery and Selma, Alabama on October 16-17 to visit the civil rights history trail.

We have a small bus reserved with a maximum of 28 seats. About 20 people signed the interest form. They will have first dibs!

If you're interested in being on the bus (whether you signed the interest form or not), please come to our meeting after the service on Sunday, June 7! We'll update you on the accommodations, sample (though not finalized) itinerary, costs and deadlines for deposit and balance; and some sample reading materials you can consider perusing to help you get more from our trip.

Questions? Write judygallagher@uucc.org
  • Here is the mobilize link to RSVP to the event, please share with anyone in your network. We have 35 RSVP's already!

Honor Wall Memorial: Why It is Needed

Sixteen to eighteen million American military records for those serving in the Army and Air Force, between November 1912 and January 1964 , were destroyed in a fire in the St. Louis archives, on July 12, 1973. Navy, Marine and Cost Records were not stored in St. Louis and are intact.

This means that if you possess any documentation , proof, that your relative served in the Army or Air Force , you may have the only proof. There is no official military personnel file (OMPF) for millions of American veterans. Eighty percent of the Army records and seventy-five percent of the Air Force records were destroyed.

Fold3.com has created a free Memorial on the Honor Wall for veterans’ families. All veterans who served in any capacity during this period are included in this attempt to preserve a record of their service. Ancestry.com took over Fold3 in 2010 and you can access it through Ancestry.com. Don’t have an account? This is what you do.

1. Use the resources available through the Chattanooga library. You can get free
access , at any library branch, to Ancestrylibrary.com, regardless of whether you
have a library card or not.

2. Look for you relative. You may be lucky and find that their records were in the
20% that survived the fire or find that someone else has already created a record.

3. No record? Look for photos in uniform or discharge papers , letters, diaries,
whatever you have.

4. Request the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) to assist in
reconstructing a file by searching alternate sources such as hospitalization
records or VA claim files, etc. Archives.gov is site to request this assistance.
NPRC is still located in St. Louis, by the way.

5. Use the Reference Librarians in the Chattanooga library system for assistance. I
plan to. You can get 3 hours of free parking in the downtown EPB garage, by the
way.

Stewardship update for 5/31/26

Thanks again to all who have pledged funds and/or time and effort to UUCC this year, and thanks to all who have helped with our Stewardship efforts! Our current pledge total is just a bit over $140K for 2026-'27, leaving us short about 10% compared with last year, and well short of our admittedly aspirational goal of $172k. The fiscal year budget for '26-'27 is being prepared as we speak, and it will need to reflect the reality of UUCC's expected income for next year. UUCC will of course continue to accept new pledges throughout the year, but it would be great to know now about funding that will occur in the future. Please contact the office (office@UUCC.org), or fill out a pledge card at church if you wish to pledge. Thanks!

Gary Beale, Stewardship Chair.
